My Teaching Philosophy
"I believe all students can be successful. As a teacher it is my responsibility to my students to help them attain the skills they need to be successful in the world. It is also important for them to learn to take responsibility for their learning and the decisions they make as students. I am here to mentor them through this process and to be a resource when they need it. I hope to provide a safe learning environment where my students feel they can learn to the best of their ability and achieve success.
I am confident that art education is a great resource for students to learn the skills needed to be successful in the world because art provides students with many opportunities for learning. In art, students attain critical thinking, time management, problem solving, and communication skills. In my classroom I hope to engage students in activities that will provide them the opportunities to learn these skills. It is important to me that as my students gain these skills, they can then transfer them to other aspects of education like math and science because some students struggle in these areas yet find success in art.
I also value the importance of critiquing in a classroom. This gives students the opportunity to learn how to talk about other's artwork and how to give constructive feedback. Critiques also provide students with the opportunity to learn how to take constructive feedback and use it to improve their artwork and communicate their ideas successfully. This can be an important skill to learn as a student because it can be transferred to learning from other feedback they get in other classrooms to improve their understanding of a subject.
I feel it is my role as a teacher to be a guide as well as a learning partner with my students. I want to provide my students with learning opportunities that will help them grow. I also want to be able to admit when I don't know the answer to their questions but then work together to find the answer. I am here to ask them questions that will challenge and teach them the skills they need to be successful. My hope is that my students will want to learn from me just as much as I want to learn from them."
